Edward R. McClellan, PhD, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at Loyola University New Orleans, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music education.
Dr. McClellan fell in love with music while still in high school, during which time he decided to learn more about music after joining a band. He subsequently attended Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in music education in 1983. He continued his studies at Duquesne, earning a master’s in music education, summa cum laude, in 1987. He later obtained a doctorate in music education in 2007 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Since 1982, Dr. McClellan has found success throughout a long career in teaching. His first position was as an instructor of concert and marching bands at Norwin High School in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He was later appointed as the band director and instrumental music teacher for the aforementioned school in 1985. He continued to accept teaching positions throughout Pennsylvania in the 1980s and 1990s, holding such titles as an instrumental music teacher, choral director, band director and general music teacher. He was likewise active as a Mary Freeman Wisdom distinguished professor of music at Loyola University New Orleans from 2014 to 2020.
Dr. McClellan is an expert in instrumental and vocal music, with extensive experience in coordinating music education, band and orchestra instruction. He has won a number of awards and honors in his career, including multiple citations in Who’s Who and a Presidential Citation received in 2000. A lifelong learner, he has devoted himself to continuous research to better understand music and teaching. Working with students became a passion early in his career, which led him to pursue a lifetime in music education. He has also published books about music education to share his passion with the world.
