Michael Bigelow, Band Director at Ann H. Kilgore Gifted Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music instruction.
Mr. Bigelow obtained a Master of Music in music education in 2013 from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, and directed high school bands for five years. He has provided superior education as band director and teacher since 2013 with the Ann H. Kilgore Gifted Center, a premier school that engages gifted students through accelerated coursework while fostering opportunities to explore their passions. His professional memberships include the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) and National Association for Music Education (NAfME).
As a participant in the Kings Dominion’s Festival of Music for band, orchestra and choral students, Mr. Bigelow captured first place for ensemble. He took great pride in Kilgore winning a Blue Ribbon from the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) in 2016, one of two schools in the district that received the Blue Ribbon and the only school in the Hampton that obtained it. The following year, the Kilgore band was invited to perform at the Royal Birthday Party for the celebration of Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday, which is another career highlight.
Mr. Bigelow attributes his success to his own sense of perfectionism in relation to working hard toward achieving his goals in life. In his sophomore year in high school, he decided to become a band director with the aspiration of reciprocating to youth the education he received from his middle school band director and his piano teacher as well as to inspire students to develop a passion for music. In the coming years, Mr. Bigelow hopes to continue his work as a band director and an educator at Ann H. Kilgore Gifted Center and continue to make a difference in the lives of his students.
