Jesse Martinez, Assistant Professor at UAB Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in children’s psychiatry practice and education.

Following obtaining a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio in 2005, Dr. Martinez continued his education with a Medical Doctor in 2011 from the San Antonio Medical School, University of Texas Health Science Center. He then served an internship with the University of Alabama (UAB) School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama from 2011 to 2012, an adult psychiatry residency with the UAB School of Medicine from 2012 to 2014, and a fellowship and chief residency in child and adolescent psychiatry with UAB from 2014 to 2016.

Dr. Martinez provided superior care from 2013 to 2016 as a staff psychiatrist with Capital Care South in Irondale, Alabama and St. Vincent’s East Hospital in Birmingham, as a contracted physician with Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham from 2015 to 2016. He subsequently excelled as Director, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinical Services with Children’s of Alabama and UAB from 2019 to 2021. Since 2016, he has flourished as medical director of the Psychiatric intake Response Center (PIRC with Chidren’s of Alabama and since 2019, director for the Children’s of Alabama Child Psychiatry Clinical Services with Children’s.

An expert in child and adolescent psychiatry, he has found success as the head of the emergency room for child psychiatry and runs consultations. He treats children who arrive at the emergency room with an acute emotional crisis or acute behavioral disturbance, assessing for suicidality, aggression and homicidality. Since 2019, he has imparted his knowledge as an assistant professor and since 2021 as clinical assistant professor with the department of psychiatry and behavioral neurobiology with the Heersink School of Medicine at UAB.

As part of his dedication to his field, Dr. Martinez is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry. He is the co-author of “Anxiety Disorders,” published in Essentials of Modern Neuroscience in 2020, and is a contributor to two published abstracts and has presented numerous poster exhibits.

In testimony to his excellence as a psychiatrist and professor, Dr. Martinez’s many honors include UABSOM Argus Award for “Best MS2 Organ Module ‘Neurosciences'” in 2017, 2020 and 2021; UAB Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Faculty Education Leadership Award  in 2019;  Friend of the ED Award from Children’s of Alabama Emergency Room in 2017; Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Leadership Awardand Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Senior Child Grand Rounds Award and ADMSEP Trainee Travel Scholar Award in 2016; Excellence in Department of Mental Health Adolescent Inpatient Award in 2015; and Chairman’s Award for Contributions to Education, Resident Leadership Award and Outstanding Community Psychiatry Resident Award in 2014.

The highlight of Dr. Martinez’s career was working to establish the Psychiatric Intake Response Center, which is a telephone triage line, of which are only three in the United States: two in Ohio and one in Alabama. In the coming years, he is working to develop a triage center or psychiatric clinic  and promote mental health in the pediatric population.
