Ashutosh Tewari, Director of Robotic Prostatectomy and Urologic Oncology Outcomes at Weill Cornell Medical College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Dr. Tewari has gained a reputation during the past four decades as one of the world’s foremost authorities in the research and treatment of prostate cancer. As the director of robotic prostatectomy and urologic oncology outcomes with Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, he has performed over 5,000 robotic radical prostatectomy surgeries, while his laboratory is currently working on unlocking the genomic causes of prostate cancer and translating genomic information to practical physician application through imaging.
After initially obtaining a bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery in 1983, Dr. Tewari followed with a Master of Science in surgery in 1987 from GSVM Medical College in Kanpur, India. He continued his education with a Master of Surgery in urology in 1991 from Sarjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute Medical Sciences, Lucknow, India, where he completed a urology residency. During medical school Dr. Tewari was awarded 17 gold medals for outstanding performance on university exams. After immigrating to the United States, he completed fellowships in urologic oncology at University of California, San Francisco and the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Following medical school, Dr. Tewari gained valuable initial experience from 1988 to 1990 as a senior registrar in urology with the Sarjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences. He then served as a transplant fellow from 1992 to 1993 with Royal Liverpool University Hospital in England and then a fellow in urologic oncology with the University of California VA Medical Center, San Francisco from 1993 to 1994 and with the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital from 1994 to 1997.
Dr. Tewari subsequently served Henry Ford Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit as a urologic oncology scholar from 1998 to 1999, a resident in urology with the Vattikuti Institute from 1999 to 2003 and chief resident from 2002 to 2003. Since 2004, he has excelled as an associate professor of urology and public health with Weill Cornell Medical College in addition to helming the urologic oncology department, serving as Ronald P. Lynch endowed chair since 2006.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Tewari is affiliated with the Society of Urologic Oncology, the International Society of Quality of Life Research, the Society of Laparoscopic Surgery, through which he earned an Achievement Award in 2002, and the Society of Indian Urologists in North America, among many others. In 2009, he was a recipient of the Clarke Medal For Surgical Innovation, from the Royal College Surgeons of England. In addition, Dr. Tewari has authored over 250 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and textbooks on prostate cancer and robotic surgery and has trained over 30 fellows and residents in robotics. His trainees have gone on to establish successful prostate cancer programs worldwide.
