Darrell Burmeister

Title: Coach, Teacher
Company: Nodaway Valley High School
Location: Greenfield, Iowa, United States

Darrell Burmeister, Coach at Nodaway Valley High School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in high school basketball and track and field coaching.

In 2021, Mr. Burmeister became the 18th coach in Iowa history and the ninth active coach to attain 600 wins, all of them with Nodaway Valley High School, which he has coached for the last 26 years, and with Bridgewater-Fontanelle. Mr. Burmeister has been recognized with a handful of state tournament wins, including a runner-up finish in 2005 and a Class 2A state title over Fort Dodge, St. Edmond in 2006. His team also went undefeated five times in the 1990s and 2000s. As a track and field coach, his boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams have qualified for 26 consecutive years for the State Cross Country Meet from 1996 to 2021. Mr. Burmeister has excelled as the coach of six Iowa high school state championship teams in three different sports, including both genders, one of a few coaches in the state who has ever accomplished this feat.

Mr. Burmeister has enjoyed a stellar career as a coach and teacher with the Nodaway Valley Community School District for over four decades. Besides his accomplishments as a coach, he taught social sciences, with an emphasis on teaching American government and economics, as well as physical education and health, before retiring from the classroom in 2021.

Mr. Burmeister chairs National Boys Cross Country Sports with the National High School Athletic Coaches Association and Iowa Association Track Coaches, is a coach/mentor with Basketball YMCA Greater Des Moines Basketball League, is a basketball coach mentor with the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association and a longstanding member of the National Education Association.

Mr. Burmeister attributes his success to being raised by his parents on a pig farm in a “farrow to finish” manner. His parents ran the farm for 40 years and treated it like their own. He maintains that the two cornerstones of his success are the industriousness and enthusiasm in work that he learned from his mother and father.

Because of his interest in bookkeeping in high school, Mr. Burmeister chose to go to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in social science in 1978, because of its reputation in accountancy.  Originally intending to be an accountant, his coaching minor ultimately set him on his future path. One of the mentors that inspired and motivated him throughout the years was legendary UCLA coach John Wooden, who he met on two occasions.
