Liane Cochran-Stafira, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Saint Xavier University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in aquatic biology research and instruction.

After initially obtaining Bachelors of Science in biology from Elmhurst College (now Elmhurst University) and Northwestern University in Evanston, Dr. Cochran-Stafira followed with Masters of Science in Biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago and DePaul University. She continued her education with a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology with emphasis on ecology and evolution in 1993 from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. In addition, Dr. Cochran-Stafira earned a Master of Music in cello and music composition from DePaul.

Dr. Cochran-Stafira provided superior education as a postdoctoral fellow and lecturer from 1995 to 1999 with the University of Chicago. Since 1999, she has excelled as an associate professor of biology with Saint Xavier University in Chicago, where her research on the direct and indirect effects of predation and competition on species diversity, as well as small aquatic invertebrates and the microbial communities on which they feed as a microbiologist and an aquatic biologist.

Dr. Cochran-Stafira’s professional memberships include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the American Society for Microbiology, the American Society of Naturalists, the British Ecological Society, the Ecological Society of America, Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society and the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Dr. Cochran-Stafira’s father was her first teacher. He would take her to the zoo practically every other week, and they also used to go out during the winter finding rabbit tracks and they would track where the rabbits spent the night. She had all kinds of pets as she was growing up and has always been surrounded by biology and nature ever since she was a child. Her goal in the next five years is to be a full professor. Dr. Cochran-Stafira is also aiming to publish her manuscripts and would like to continue teaching at Saint Xavier University, where she plans an experiment that she has had in the back of her mind for many years.
