Tonia Holmes-Sutton, EdD, NBCT, Executive Director at Nevada National Board Professional Learning Institute: Empowering Teachers as Leaders & Learners, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in educational development.

Hailing from a family of educators, Dr. Holmes-Sutton watched in awe as her family opened the first school for Black students in their community. Inspired to spearhead a career in education in her own right, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts and sciences, general studies and humanities from Hawaii Loa College in 1992. Later, she also achieved a Master of Education in the teaching of individuals in early childhood special education programs and a Doctor of Education in educational leadership from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2004 and a 2012, respectively.

Dr. Holmes-Sutton commenced her career as an early childhood teacher for Clark County School District in 2001 and subsequently became a kindergarten teacher at Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy by 2005. She had then been a professional development presenter for SDE Staff Development for seven years until 2014, while also serving as a literary specialist at the Rainbow Dream Academy and special education teacher and project facilitator with the Clark County School District. In addition, Dr. Holmes-Sutton has been a coordinator for International Experience USA from 2014 to 2016.

In 2017, Dr. Holmes-Sutton founded the Nevada National Board Professional Learning Institute: Empowering Teachers as Leaders & Learners to support her colleagues in the pursuit of her national board certification. She continues to serve as executive director through today, in which she strives to provide a more diverse group of students and educators with greater opportunities in the educational sector. Additionally, she is executive director of Teacher Plus Nevada. Alongside her primary roles, Dr. Holmes-Sutton has also dedicated time to serving as president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas COE Alumni Association and as director of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

To attest to her success, Dr. Holmes-Sutton has been the recipient of various accolades, including appointment by the governor of Nevada to the Nevada State Board of Education. In 2020, she was recognized as the University of Nevada, Las Vegas College of Education Alumna of the Year. Dr. Holmes-Sutton’s advice to the future generation who wish to enter educational administration and development is to have faith and belief in oneself, as well as one’s ability to do good, make a difference, accept that there will always be uncertainty, and be empowered by others.
