Roberta Kagin, Professor Emerita at Augsburg University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music instruction and therapy.

For nearly five decades beginning in 1974, Dr. Kagin has provided superior education as a professor and director of music therapy with Augsburg College. As a distinguished music educator, her specialties have involved curriculum development, maintaining standards of the National Association for Schools of Music and the American Music Therapy Association, program building through recruitment, grant writing, scholarships, advising students, creating community partnerships and creating new and innovative community programs for children, adolescents and the elderly.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in sociology in 1965 from Park University in Missouri, Dr. Kagin completed a Master of Music Education in 1971 from the University of Kansas. She later continued her education with a Doctor of Philosophy in 2010 in music therapy from Temple University. In addition to her exemplary work in music therapy and instruction, Dr. Kagin has excelled as an organist with various churches of numerous denominations. In addition, she sang in the Masterworks Chorale at Augsburg and teaches private piano students in her home.

Dr. Kagin has received an Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Music Therapy Award from Temple University and is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her professional memberships include the American Music Therapy Association, the Mayflower UCC Choir and Friends of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Attributing her success to being passionate about the field, Dr. Kagin intends to spread the word about music therapy to others and let them know how important music is in the lives of all people.

Dr. Kagin started as a music therapist in St. Paul public schools, where she worked with children with behavioral problems. Notably, she was the first music therapist in the public schools in St. Paul. She was contacted by the music department chair at the Augsburg College, who asked her if she would be interested in developing a curriculum at Augsburg College. She agreed, and soon set to work creating the program. It had humble beginnings, starting out with just three students, but eventually it grew to 40 students in the undergraduate program. Dr. Kagin then went on to create a master’s degree in music therapy, which is now in operation.

Dr. Kagin considers her most notable achievements to have been earning a PhD and being promoted to the rank of professor. She also takes pride in having developed a signature program at Augsburg University. In the coming years, she plans to publish children’s books, continue to teach and hopefully visit Scotland.
