Dearing Johns, Associate Professor Emerita at University of Virginia, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in cardiology education.

Following undergraduate years at Sweet Briar College, Dr. Johns obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville in 1977, after which she served a residency in internal medicine with the George Washington University and a fellowship in hypertension, internal medicine and cardiology with the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

Joining the staff of her alma mater in 1985, Dr. Johns provided superior service from 1990 to 2013 as associate professor of medicine of cardiology with the University of Virginia. In this position, she specialized in researching mechanisms causing hypertension with special focus on the renin angiotensin hormonal system. Her clinical interest included prevention of heart disease with a focus on hypertension and lipid management as well as heart disease in women. Since 2013, she has been designated by the aforementioned university as a professor emerita.

As a tribute to her stellar service to the University of Virginia, Dr. Johns has been honored with the school’s Douglas Eastwood Award in Anesthesiology. In addition, she captured the First Annual University of Virginia Research Day Award and was accepted into the Raven Society, the university’s oldest and most prestigious honorary society. In addition, the university’s alumni relations committee presented the 2013 Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award to Dr. Johns for her longstanding loyalty and leadership to the UVA Medical Alumni Association and Medical School Foundation.

Dr. Johns attributes her success to the mentors who helped her open doors to a successful career. In the coming years, she is hoping to continue her own mentoring of former patients and students.
