Jennifer Smith, Art Teacher at Neosho Middle School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in art instruction.
For the past five years, Ms. Smith has excelled as an art teacher with Neosho Middle School, teaching about 200 children from August through December and 400 children from January through May. She has won Teacher of the Year in the McDonald County School District, a Golden Apple Award and Certified Employee of the Month in the Neosho School District. Her professional memberships include the Missouri State Teachers Association and Missouri Art Education Association.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in 2001 in art education from Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, Ms. Smith is studying toward a master’s degree from The Art of Education University, Osage, Iowa, the world’s first fully-accredited graduate university exclusively serving K-12 art teachers.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Ms. Smith was investigating social and emotional learning and art therapy. When her school had to go virtual, it had affected her students and through the arts she was able to connect with them through the internet. Ms. Smith enjoys teaching students new things, which included painting some historical murals. She also works with watercolor paint, acrylic paints and clay/pottery.
In the coming years, Ms. Smith would like to finish her master’s degree and to get more into art therapy and decide whether to stay in the public school system or move on and teach college or university levels.
