William Payne, Dean of College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources at University of Nevada, Reno, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in soil and crop studies.

Since 2014, Dr. Payne has provided superior education as the dean of the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources at the University of Nevada, Reno, where his research interests include crop physiology, systems agronomy, soil physics and hydrology, soil fertility and plant nutrition, international agriculture, sustainability, agroclimatology, modeling, alternative crops, and crop diversification. From 2011 to 2014, he served as the director of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and, from 2010 to 2011, as the assistant director of research with the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture.

Previously, Dr. Payne found success with Texas A&M University as a research assistant from 1984 to 1990 and a postdoctoral researcher from 1990 to 1991. He thereupon served as a principal scientist with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Niger, Africa from 1991 to 1997, and an assistant professor agronomy at Oregon State University from 1997 to 2000. He returned to Texas A&M University in Bushland as an associate professor and a professor in crop physiology from 2000 to 2010.

After initially obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1981 from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Dr. Payne continued his education with a Master of Science in soil science in 1986 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1990 from Texas A&M University. He served as a peace corps volunteer in Mauritania from 1981 to 1984 and an associate editor of leading trade publication Agronomy Journal from 1998 to the present. Attributing his success to his passion for agriculture and teaching, Dr. Payne initially considered a career in industrial chemistry but when he went to Mauritania and Niger, he became interested in chemistry and physics. In the coming years, he intends to continue teaching with the goal helping to have a transformational impact on society.
