Professor Georgia J. Herron, Professor (Retired) at Howard University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in science education.

Ms. Herron’s career in education began when she became a volunteer teacher in her local church. She felt a natural calling to the work, which lead her to earn a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Miner Teachers College in 1946. Miner Teachers College was the principal school to train Black teachers in Washington, D.C. for more than 70 years until becoming the University of the District of Columbia. Later, in 1973, Ms. Herron attained a Master of Science from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

In her professional endeavors, Mr. Herron excelled as a professor of elementary science at Howard University for 20 years. During that time, she had also served as chairperson of the science program. Even after she retired in 1986, she recalls people would send their kids to her home to learn about science. Still an educator at heart, Ms. Herron also dedicated her retirement to visiting local schools and volunteering with science fairs and after-school science programs. Notably, her teaching efforts were recognized by the District of Columbia Teachers Science Association.

To remain abreast of her field, Ms. Herron maintains professional affiliation with the District of Columbia Teachers Science Association and the National Science Teaching Association. Attributing her success to her strong observational skills, as well as her passion for educating students and teachers alike, she reflects on her exceptional career with fondness and pride. At the age of 96, Ms. Herron recalls some of her greatest achievements have been training young teachers and traveling throughout the United States to attend NST meetings. Ms. Herron’s creed is, “God knows where the children are. Don’t leave anyone out.”
