Title: Mathematics Teacher
Company: Wise County School Board
Location: Norton, Virginia, United States
Joyce Wallace, Mathematics Teacher at Wise County School Board, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mathematics instruction.
For more than three decades, from 1974 to 2005, Ms. Wallace provided superior education as a mathematics teacher with the Wise County School Board in Virginia. She was the first student with a General Educational Development Test to graduate from the University of Virginia at Wise, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education in 1974. Ms. Wallace later continued her education with a Master of Arts in education and curriculum from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg in 1982.
Ms. Wallace’s most notable achievement is the fact that her students have called her the most influential teacher that they had ever had. She had originally never intended to become a teacher, but when she was on the school bus during test days, she was bombarded by high school boys asking her to tutor them because they needed to know how to perform a certain problem for their exam. That was how she got started in the field, until she married her husband, who taught eighth-grade students science and English until his death from diabetes in 1985. It was he who had encouraged her to obtain her master’s degree. In the coming years, Ms. Wallace will be assisting her daughter and son-in-law to find a suitable location in Tennessee for a small company where they may cultivate and sell plants as well as operate a greenhouse.
