Michelle L. Bartels, High School Science Teacher at Hamlin School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in science instruction.

Ms. Bartels has excelled as an educator on the Hamlin School District in South Dakota for more than two decades. After initially obtaining a bachelor’s degree in education from Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota, Ms. Bartels continued her education with a master’s degree in curriculum and Instruction from Black Hills State University in Spearfish. She thereupon has provided superior education as a middle school teacher from 2000 to 2021 and a physical science, physics and chemistry high school teacher beginning in 2021.

Ms. Bartels has been a participant in the Transatlantic Outreach Program, a public/private partnership that provides curriculum and study tour experiences relevant to contemporary Germany, including social studies educators, STEM educators, and workforce development professionals. In addition, she has served as president, newsletter co-editor and website designer of the South Dakota Science Teaching Association, and her other professional memberships include the National Education Association, South Dakota Education Association, Hamlin Education Association and the National Science Teaching Association. In addition, Ms. Bartels has been a State Finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Attributing her success as a teacher to her parents, who motivated her and taught her the importance of always improving herself and continuing to learn, Ms. Bartels maintains that she had wanted to be an educator since she was very young, as she found mathematics easy and helped her sister do her math homework. Her middle school teacher instilled her interest in science. She stresses that her greatest achievement is being able to help her students have a good retention of the knowledge they receive. In coming years, Ms. Bartels is interested in traveling and assisting science teachers beyond her district and  would also like to extend her helping hands to her fellow teachers and students.
