Suzanne R. Costner, School Library Media Specialist at Fairview Elementary School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in library administration.

Since 2008, Ms. Costner has provided superior service as school library media specialist with Fairview Elementary School in Maryville. Previously, she had excelled as an elementary school teacher from 1997 to 2008 at Lenoir City Elementary and then Montvale Elementary. After initially obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in classics and classical languages, literature and linguistics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1987, Ms. Costner prepared for her later career with an Associate of Science in early childhood education and teaching from Northern Virginia Community College in 1992 and later continued her education with master’s degrees in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction and Library and Information Science from the University of Tennessee in 2008.

Ms. Costner’s professional affiliations include the National Council of Teachers of English, where she served on the Orbis Pictus Award committee from 2019 to 2021, the American Library Association and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, for which she was appointed as a committee chair. With Fairview Elementary, she was a member of STEM Committee and Robotics Club and was a Tech Teacher Leader.

Notably, in 2016 Ms. Costner was became the first librarian to receive the Tennessee Outstanding Educator Award. In addition, in what she considers a career highlight, she garnered a National Award for Aerospace Education Award from the Civil Air Patrol as well as an Excellence in Teaching Award from the East Tennessee Historical Society. Attributing her success to her ability as a good reader, a good researcher, and a good communicator, Ms. Costner intends in the coming years to hopes to continue her work as a librarian with Fairview Elementary as well as help build its STEM program.
