Carrie Mitchell, Associate Professor at Siena Heights University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in special education.
Since 2009, Dr. Mitchell has been an associate professor and department chair in special education at Siena Heights University. Additionally, she serves as director of undergraduate and graduate education at Siena Heights. She holds certificates in K-12 Special Education and cognitive impairment and learning disabilities education. In recognition of her work, Dr. Mitchell has been named Employee of the Month twice and was nominated twice for an Outstanding Professor Award.
Dr. Mitchell earned her Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Toledo. She has been a lifelong advocate for individuals with disabilities for over 25 years after witnessing a friend’s younger brother’s struggles, which engendered an interest in the neurobiological processes of learning disabilities and how to assist and teach such children to read and write. She considers her career highlight having mentored very high-quality special education teachers.
In the coming years, Dr. Mitchell hopes to be able to produce more journal publications and to do qualitative research. She would also like to visit some of the smaller communities in northern Michigan to collect stories for their historical societies; after that, she is looking to settle into retirement.
