Holly Bean, Professor at the University of Southern Maine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geriatrics education.
Dr. Bean has always had a passion for the field of geriatrics, the branch of medicine or social science dealing with the health and care of older people. She currently excels as the director of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Southern Maine and as a licensed clinical professional counselor for the New England Family Institute in Portland. Dr. Bean works closely with the American Therapeutic Recreation Association and advises enrolled students, creates and teaches online courses and provides students with letters of recommendation for graduate studies or jobs.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in therapeutic recreation, summa cum laude, from the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2009, Dr. Bean followed with dual Masters of Science in Mental Health Consulting and Rehabilitation Counseling in 2013 and a Doctor of Philosophy in public policy with the Muskie School of Public Service at USM in 2020. She began her career as an in-home companion with Aging Excellence, Portland, from 2006 to 2011 and as gained valuable professional expertise as an assistant activities director for Bay Square at Yarmouth and as a manager, volunteer coordinator and elder life specialist for Maine Medical Center’s Hospital Elder Life Program from 2009 to 2015.
Dr. Bean’s success stems from her curiosity about how humans can use their own ability to heal themselves, utilizing the holistic health and meditation that came with her own illness and injury. She suffered a traumatic brain injury in 1989, developed a new way of learning, and had a stroke in 2000. Dr. Bean attributes her success to perseverance, tenacity and having a genuine and positive regard for human beings and the belief that “we’re all in this together.”
