Ethel Maureen Frese, professor emeritus at Saint Louis University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physical therapy and education.
Though Dr. Frese initially intended to enroll in a dance program in Chicago, she fell in love with the physical therapy profession while volunteering as a hospital employee after her dance instructor suffered a back injury. With a newfound inspiration to become a healthcare professional, Dr. she initially obtained a Bachelor of Science in physical therapy from Washington University in 1974. Thereafter, she returned to Washington University to earn a Master of Health Science in 1985. She completed her education in 2006, at which time she graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy from Saint Louis University.
Dr. Frese began her career with Saint Louis University in 1978 as an adjunct instructor within the Department of Physical Therapy for the School of Allied Health Professions. Within the aforementioned institution, she has found additional success as an adjunct assistant professor, an assistant professor and an associate professor within the Doisy College of Health Sciences. In 2014, she is honored to have attained emeritus status. Over the course of her career, she has found additional success as an educator within institutions such as Maryville University, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Washington University. Currently, she excels as an adjunct instructor for the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Meramec Junior College and an adjunct instructor within the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
For her contributions in the field, Dr. Frese is honored to have been presented with recent accolades such as the Helen Holzum Whealen Service Award, the Lucy Blair Service Award, the Linda Crane Memorial Lectureship Award, the Leadership Award from the Saint Louis University Women’s Commission and the Outstanding Service Award for Education from the Missouri Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association. Though her career has been suffused with highlights, she is most proud to have been selected as the mace bearer for the 2021 graduation ceremony at Saint Louis University. Looking toward the future, her goal is to keep her brain sharp, continue learning and spend quality time with her grandchildren.
