Ms. Wright has spent more than five decades coaching elite competitive gymnasts around the globe. The daughter of top New Zealand gymnast and diver Rita Marlow, she began competitive gymnastics training as a child before her mother recognized that her talents lay in coaching. Encouraged by her early success, Ms. Wright began coaching professionally in 1970.
Before immigrating to the United States in 1975, Ms. Wright studied journalism and physical education at the University of Otago. She continued to coach and owned a gymnastics training facility until 2014, with clients including more than 100 athletic scholarship recipients and a dozen Olympians. Ms. Wright is best-known for her eye for detail, ability to refine small details in routines, and emphasis on showcasing her athletes’ personalities and artistry in competition.
Since 2015, Ms. Wright has focused on educating other coaches as the owner of Masters of Sport, and has traveled internationally to promote gymnastics and continuing education for coaches and trainers. She has been nominated multiple times for Coach of the Year and Choreographer of the Year, and has been inducted into the New Zealand Order of Merit and the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame for her contributions to the sport. Ms. Wright has published several gymnastics books and manuals, and is currently working on completing another, titled “Tapestry of Gymnastics.” Outside the gym, Ms. Wright is active with canine rescue and adoption charities, and has provided her services pro bono to students at the University of Utah and young athletes with special needs.
