Charlotte P. Scarbrough, reading specialist at Teaneck Public School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in reading education.
With over 60 years of expertise in phonics, Dr. Scarbrough has dedicated her career to providing accessible reading education to underserved students in the local community. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education from the Pennsylvania State University prior to earning a master’s degree in remedial reading from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. Thereafter, she completed her education at the Teachers’ College of Columbia University, graduating with a Doctor of Education in 1983. Over the course of her career, she has found additional success as an elementary school teacher and a substitute teacher in both Philadelphia and New York. Though she was initially considering attending law school, she ultimately decided to pursue a career in education to remain close to her family.
Dr. Scarbrough is proud to have helped several generations of students meet grade-level benchmarks. Though she is now retired, she is active as a volunteer reading instructor for various school districts and has worked with at-risk students on high school dropout recovery and prevention. Additionally, she is proud to serve as an advocate for Habitat for Humanity. Above all, she attributes her success to her family, who have always given her a purpose and the determination to keep moving forward, despite facing the most difficult of circumstances.
