Joseph Cominio Jr., Teacher at Palms West Charter School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in civics education.
As the first person in his family to attend and graduate from college, Mr. Cominio understood the transformative opportunities that education creates and wanted to help others in the same position. He earned a Bachelor of Social Science, with honors, from Duquesne University in 1978 through grants former President Richard Nixon, and began his career as a social studies, geography, and American history teacher before joining Charter Schools USA. For the next 42 years, Mr. Cominio excelled as a teacher at the Palms West Charter School in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.
Mr. Cominio is proud to have been the first middle school civics teacher to implement the Civics Group Engaged Service Program, which led the state of Florida to require civics curriculum for seventh grade students. Prior to its adoption, United States government classes were only available at the high school level. Mr. Cominio attributes all his success to his passion and enthusiasm, explaining that “nothing of substance can succeed without passion.” Outside the classroom, Mr. Cominio is active in his local Rotary Club and has partnered with local churches and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department for food drives. Mr. Cominio looks forward to continuing his work putting civics education in action and expanding its availability in schools.
