Joyce A. Seymour, Retired Elementary Guidance Counselor and Teacher at Fairborn City Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary education.
Interested in becoming an educator from a young age, Ms. Seymour earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Purdue University in 1970 and began her career as an elementary art teacher before joining Fairborn City Schools, where she would remain for the rest of her career. Ms. Seymour first served as a fifth-grade teacher between 1970 and 1984, during which time she also earned a Master of Arts with a focus in counseling from Wright State University in 1974. From 1984 until her retirement in 2000, she was an elementary guidance counselor. Punctuating this appointment, she also served as a sixth-grade teacher between 1994 and 1995.
Ms. Seymour is a certified elementary educator and counselor and, as of 1978, a licensed pilot. She was a volunteer for the Miami Valley Women’s Center from 2007 to 2012 and has held numerous leadership roles in her local church, including Evangelism chairperson and vice president. In addition, Ms. Seymour sat on the Wright State University School of Counseling advisory committee. Outside her work in education, Ms. Seymour is a writer and has been published in anthologies including “A Treasury of Famous Poems,” 1997.
Among the highlights of her career, Ms. Seymour is especially proud of counseling students in K through sixth grades, particularly in programs regarding drug education, self-esteem and careers. Throughout her own career, she also enjoyed educating students on the importance of their own well-being. She attributes her success to her faith in God, as well as the support and encouragement from her parents. Looking forward, Ms. Seymour intends to continue enjoying her retirement.
