Fernando Colon-Navarro, Professor at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of legal education.

Mr. Colon-Navarro has been a professor at the Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law since 1991. During his time with the school, he has served as associate dean, and in 2012, he was named director of the Master of Laws program and immigration development. During this time, Mr. Colon-Navarro also maintained involvement as a visiting associate professor at the Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, and as a visiting professor with the University of Puerto Rico Law School. He began his academic career in 1987 as the director of the Harvard Law School Immigration Clinic.

Prior to his work in education, Mr. Colon-Navarro served in the public sector as an assistant attorney with the Chicago Board of Education and as a staff attorney for the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund from 1983 to 1986, and the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis from 1981 until 1983. Mr. Colon-Navarro holds a Bachelor of Arts from St. John’s University, a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Minnesota Law School, a Master of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School. He entered his profession as a law clerk and trial assistant for the Hennepin County Public Defender’s Office in Minneapolis in 1979.

Mr. Colon-Navarro has been published in the Thurgood Marshall Law Review, the Journal of the Legal Profession and the Florida Journal of International Law and delivered presentations on immigration law at conferences and symposia including the Southwest Association of Law Schools’ 2014 Annual Conference, the 2010 Hispanic National Bar Association Annual Conference and the Ninth Informative Seminar on Mexico through the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

To commemorate his various accomplishments, he has been recognized as an Outstanding Visiting Professor by the Student Bar Association Wesleyan University School of Law in 2000, named Professor of the Year multiple times, and presented with an Achievement Award from the Chicano Law Student Association in 1996 and the Lex Justa Award from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 1992.
