Gerald Lee Burton, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Virginia State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mathematics education.

Dr. Burton earned a Bachelor of Science from Livingstone College in 1976, a Master of Arts from Ohio State University in 1978, and his Doctor of Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1986. From 1978 until 2021, he taught mathematics at Virginia State University in addition to serving as the President of the VSU Chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity and the VSU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, a faculty advisor for several student organizations and chair of numerous committees including the VSU Faculty Senate. Dr. Burton sat on the University Calendar Committee for 30 years and is regarded as the longest-serving commencement chief marshal in the history of the institution. Over the course of his career, he has maintained professional affiliations with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Mathematical Society, the National Technical Association, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematics Association of America. Outside his work with Virginia State University, Dr. Burton has taught graduate-level courses for in-service teachers throughout Central Virginia and delivered academic presentations at numerous professional conferences throughout the country.

Dr. Burton is proud to be the first African American to receive a doctoral degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and to have been named one of the Outstanding Young Men of America, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity National Scholar, the Delta Sigma Theta Petersburg Alumnae Chapter Educator of the Year and the Petersburg Chapter of Jack and Jill of America Father of the Year. Furthermore, he has been presented with multiple VSU Department of Mathematics Teaching Effectiveness Awards and the VSU Outstanding Faculty Award. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 and has been selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who Among American Educators, Who’s Who Among American Professionals and Executives, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and Who’s Who Among American Teachers.
