Dr. Robert L. Grete, superintendent emeritus of Rocky Bayou Christian School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in school administration and military service.
Prior to beginning his career in education, Dr. Grete, then a cadet, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY in 1958. Swiftly advancing to the rank of lieutenant, Dr. Grete served as a pilot in the United States Air Force. While serving as a mission pilot in Waco, TX, Dr. Grete earned a Master of Arts in political science degree from Baylor University in 1963. He pursued graduate coursework at Columbia University in preparation to serve as an instructor and assistant professor and course director for Insurance and Personal Finance in the Department of Social Sciences at the United States Military Academy from 1963 to 1967.
As a captain, Dr. Grete then served a Southeast Asia combat tour assigned to the 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron in Thailand. There, he directed fighter aircraft strikes against an enemy force as an airborne forward air controller from November 1967 to October 1968, and was awarded two Silver Stars, a Distinguished Flying Cross, and 13 Air Medals.
Dr. Grete taught Economics and Government for the University of Maryland European Division from 1969 to 1971, and its Far East Division in 1978 during assignments in Stuttgart Germany and Osan Korea, respectively.
Dr. Grete earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Auburn University in 1972, while en route to HQ, US Special Operation Force at Eglin AFB, FL. In 1973, he founded the Rocky Bayou Christian School (RBCS), where he remained as director and superintendent until being granted emeritus status in 2005.
Dr. Grete retired from the USAF on January 1, 1980, having logged over 5,700 pilot flight hours. In addition to teaching at RBCS through academic year 2015, he served tours as an instructor at Okaloosa-Walton Junior College and the Gulf Coast Division of Troy State University. He was awarded a Doctor of Pedagogy degree by Clearwater Christian College in 2005.
Dr. Grete, husband for over 62 years to Katherine, shares six children, 32 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren (so far). He serves as the director, secretary and treasurer of RBCS, Inc., and is on the Boards of several other community agencies.
