Dr. Deborah Ann Konkowski, Professor at the U.S. Naval Academy, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of mathematics.
With more than three decades of inimitable expertise in her chosen field, Dr. Konkowski has garnered a laudable reputation as an educator at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, where she began as an assistant professor in 1987, advancing to full professor in 1997. Specializing in mathematical physics, special relativity and general relativity, her research interests include black holes, cosmic strings and space-time analysis. Well regarded for talent in the field, Dr. Konkowski has been invited to deliver talks throughout the world and has published more than 50 articles in scientific publications including Physical Review D, Classical and Quantum Gravity, General Relativity and Gravitation, the International Journal of Modern Physics and the American Journal of Physics.
In addition to her position at the U.S. Naval Academy, Dr. Konkowski was invited to serve as a visiting professor at Queen Mary University of London in 1995, 2002, and 2013. To remain aware of emerging developments in the field, she maintains her affiliation with various organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, the American Mathematics Society, the New York Academy of Science and the International Society of General Relativity and Gravitation.
While coming of age, Dr. Konkowski cultivated a deep and abiding interest in astronomy and physics. Reading books on the subjects of stars and galaxies only fueled her passion for the subject, and she drew deeply from the influence of her high school calculus and physics teacher. Dr. Konkowski earned a Bachelor of Science in physics at Harvey Mudd College in 1977 and completed her Doctor of Philosophy in physics at the University of Texas at Austin in 1983.
Among her many career accomplishments, Dr. Konkowski was particularly gratified to have received the U.S. Naval Academy’s outstanding faculty research award in 2010. Additionally, she was elected as a research fellow of both the University of London from 1985 until 1987 and the University of Maryland, College Park between 1983 and 1985. Dr. Konkowski’s research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation from 1989 to 2004, and from the U.S. Naval Academy from 1987 until 1989.
