Robert M. Fossum, Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts from St. Olaf College in 1959, Dr. Fossum continued his education at the University of Michigan where he completed a Master of Arts in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1965. Immediately joining the professional world of academia, he served the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an instructor, assistant, associate and full professor until attaining the title of professor emeritus in 2008. Having taught electronics and computer engineering, among other subjects, he had simultaneously excelled as a professor at the Beckman Institute from 2000 to 2008. Since his retirement, Dr. Fossum has dedicated his time to serving as president of Trøndelag of America, an organization for the descendants of emigrants from the Trøndelag region of Norway.
Dr. Fossum was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from Northfield High School in 2000 and an Alumni Achievement Award from St. Olaf College in 2010. Earlier, he was a Fulbright fellow at the University of Oslo in Norway from 1967 to 1968, later returning to the University of Oslo, Aarhus University and Copenhagen University in Denmark as a visiting lecturer and professor. Dr. Fossum is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Det Kongelig Norske Videnskabers Selskab, American Mathematical Society. He also maintains membership with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and Association for Computing Machinery. In recognition of his career accomplishments, Dr. Fossum has been profiled in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who in the World.
