Myrtle Irene Welch, PhD, English and reading teacher within the El Paso Independent School District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.

Renowned for her expertise in English and reading instruction, Dr. Welch is proud to have celebrated a storied career with the El Paso Independent School District for nearly 25 years. Due in part to her lifelong love for reading, she initially obtained a Bachelor of Science in English, with a minor in speech and drama, from Southern University and A&M College in 1969. Thereafter, Dr. Welch earned a Master of Education in reading with a minor in school counseling from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1990.

Following these accomplishments, Dr. Welch began her career as a basic adult education teacher at the United States Army Education Center in Fort Bliss, Texas from 1980 to 1983. Dedicated to the field of education, she continued her career as a visiting professor at New Mexico State University and an English Teacher at Sylvan Online. Subsequently, Dr. Welch graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in curriculum and instruction, with a minor in reading, from New Mexico State University in 2007.

Dr. Welch has since found notable success as an adjunct professor at the University of Central Florida in 2008 and an assistant professor at Buffalo State College from 2008 to 2014. For her achievements, she was recently honored as a Woman of Distinction by the Women of Distinction Magazine, a Service-Learning Center 2010 Faculty Fellow of Buffalo State College, a Woman of the Year by the American Biographical Institute and a Woman of Distinction by the El Paso Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Theta Sorority. Moreover, she is the recipient of the Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Achievement as a Volunteer from Buffalo State College and the Outstanding Service Award from United States Senator Ed Pastor. Additionally, she is gratified to have presented her research at the Oxford Roundtable in England and oversaw the establishment of the Dr. Myrtle Irene Welch Writing Center in Kampala, Uganda which bears her namesake. Looking toward the future, Dr. Welch aims to continue helping students pursue their dreams and achieve their life goals.
