Kendal J. Owens, kindergarten through fifth grade science teacher at Gatesville Elementary School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in elementary education.
Initially interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, Ms. Owens obtained a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Elizabeth City State University in 1987. She began her career as a veterinarian assistant and a head technician at Actin Animal Hospital from 1987 to 1995 before finding success as a medical assistant and x-ray technician at Doctor’s Inn Urgent Care from 1996 to 2004 and a dental assistant at General Dentist from 2004 to 2006. With her experience as a professional dog trainer, she took an interest in pursuing a career as an educator. After observing elementary classes and taking education courses, she made it her mission to impact as many children as possible. Above all, she believes that nothing compares to the feeling of accomplishment when a child learns and understands something new.
In addition to her professional career, she contributes to the Positive Behavior and the Relay for Life Team at Gatesville Elementary School and the district and school teams of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports in North Carolina. She is gratified to have been recognized for the excellence her students have achieved on inner-grade tests. For her accomplishments as a dog trainer she is honored to have been presented with the Canine Good Citizenship Award and the Out of Companion Title and the Two Legs are Hurting Title. Throughout her career, she has maintained affiliations with the National Science Teacher Association, Beta Honor Society and the Portsmouth Chesapeake Obedience Training Club. Currently in pursuit of a Master of Arts in science education from East Carolina University, her goal for the future is to continue working as an educator while advancing to the junior college level.
