Company: West Virginia University
Location: Morgantown, West Virginia, USA
Peter V. Schaeffer, Professor of Rural and Regional Development and Economic Policy at West Virginia University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in economic policy.
Dr. Schaeffer became involved in his profession because he grew up in Switzerland with two parents who were naturalized citizens, so he has always been interested in international migration. Just before he graduated, he was very fortunate to get a job in a consulting office. While there, he worked with consultants in urban and regional planning and development. His colleagues were architects, planners, and landscape architects, so he learned a lot from them and with them, which changed his career path. Dr. Schaeffer earned a Licentiate in economics from the University of Zurich in 1975. He then matriculated at the University of Southern California, where he earned a Master of Arts in economics in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics in 1981.
The highlight of Dr. Schaeffer’s career has been all his accomplishments as an administrator. Additionally, he was successful at the Denver campus, as well as his first administrative job at West Virginia University, and was able to enhance performance by creating a certain environment. He did not do it alone, it was working with others to be successful, so he worked with others in his unit, and he enjoyed that. He is also extremely proud of his research as an economist. He is one of the early economists that did serious research on migration. Dr. Schaeffer joined West Virginia University in 1993 as a professor for the Division of Resource Economics and Management and as the director of the Division of Resource Management. He remained with the university until 2021, also holding the positions of director of the Division of Family and Consumer Science and interim director of the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences. As a testament to his success, Dr. Schaeffer received the William H. Miernyk Award from the Regional Research Institute at West Virginia University in 2008, William A. Schaeffer Service Award from the Southern Regional Science Association, and was named a fellow of the Southern Regional Science Association in 2018.
