Mr. Smith was inspired to pursue a career as an educator because of the guidance he received from his own high school coaches and teachers. He subsequently earned a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Paul Quinn College and a Master’s degree in education from Northwestern State University. For 50 years thereafter, he found success as a teacher specializing in advanced math and trigonometry. Additionally, he has led the boys’ basketball team to win eight state championships. With a total of 1,087 wins with his team, he is proud to have accrued the most wins in the history of the state of Louisiana.
As a result of his victories, Mr. Smith contributed as the co-writer and producer of the documentary “Chasing 1,000 Wins,” and the author of “In My Footsteps.” For his achievements, he has been inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Coaches Hall of Fame and the National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He attributes his success to his parents, who have supported him throughout his life, and his wife, Rosa Bynog Smith, for whom he is deeply thankful.
