James Sherin

James Sherin, Instructor and Former Senior Systems Analyst/Programmer, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in information technology.

Mr. Sherin was inspired to venture into information technology while teaching high school mathematics. It was during a school trip to tour a data center at the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company that he discovered the motivation to return to school to pursue a degree in assembly languages. He originally received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics ,with a minor in history and engineering, at Geneva College in 1962 and subsequently undertook coursework towards a master’s degree at Duquesne University. Since 2005, Mr. Sherin has utilized his skills and experience to serve as a part-time instructor in mathematics, information technology and engineering and networking with the University of Pittsburgh.

Prior to taking on this role, Mr. Sherin devoted his talents to serving UPMC Health Systems as a UNIX systems administrator from 1997 until 2003. He spent a year as a systems administrator for Thrift Drug Inc., and previously, in such roles as a systems programmer, user consultant, manager and project leader for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Mr. Sherin has also worked as a pre-sales analyst for Cray Research Inc., an on-site analyst and analyst-in-charge for Control Data Corporation, and a teacher of mathematics for the Rochester Area School District. He is a former teacher of a local community college and has also worked as a contractor for the city government of Dayton, Ohio.

Mr. Sherin attributes his success to having the ability to communicate with people, as well as his excellent memory for numbers. Throughout the course of his career, he has always striven to be of service to the general public. Specifically, Mr. Sherin has volunteered as a  Scoutmaster for the  Boy Scouts of America and has served as a raffle volunteer for his local church. In recognition of his commitment to these duties, he notably received a Wood Badge, Silver Beaver Award and was named as an Emblems Counselor from the Boy Scouts of America.
