Title: Special Education Teacher (Retired)
Company: Special School District of St. Louis County
Location: Ballwin, Missouri, United States
Carol Jo Simpson, a retired Special Education Teacher at the Special School District of St. Louis County, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in special education.
Having long taken an interest in music, Ms. Simpson enrolled in a musical therapy program in 1977, where she spent much of her time working with young children and the mentally handicapped. In this capacity, she discovered her passion for helping those in need, and shortly thereafter applied to become a teaching assistant. Securing a position in 1983 at Parkway Central High School, Ms. Simpson worked as a secondary school special education teacher until her retirement from the field in 2012.
Ms. Simpson earned an Associates of Arts from Mineral Area Junior College in 1975. Following this accomplishment, she received a Bachelor of Arts in music education from the University of Missouri Kansas City in 1978, after which she earned a Master of Arts in special education from Webster University in 1983. Upon the completion of her degrees, Ms. Simpson became a registered music therapist.
In a career suffused with highlights, Ms. Simpson is most proud to have been a wonderful mother to her children, all of whom have achieved success in their own right. Likewise, she is gratified to have built a firm foundation for many young students to stand upon as they embark upon their own journeys through life, with many of them becoming real estate agents, professional football players, nonprofit organizers and even teachers. Ms. Simpson remains in communication with many of her former pupils, and delights in their stories of success.
As a testament to her success, Ms. Simpson was named as the Teacher of the Year at Parkway Central High School in 2011. Since her retirement, she has also served as a member of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association and Public School Personnel. Looking towards the future, Ms. Simpson aspires to be involved with her local inner city high school district, where her daughter is currently working, as a reading and learning assistant.
