Dessy Boneva, MD, FACS, associate professor at the University of South Florida, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in surgery.
Dr. Boneva started in engineering, then went to a specialized school in Bulgaria, started mathematics, and ended up loving it. This led to her enrolling in a technical university in Bulgaria where she thrived. She was selected to study in Russia and developed an interest in medicine after serving as a volunteer translator for a group visiting Moscow on a medical mission trip. It motivated her to go on other mission trips and that was when she made the transition to go into medicine. Upon completion of her degree, she became a postdoctoral research fellow for the Baltimore VA Medical Center from 2003 to 2004. From there, she became a general surgery resident at the University of Maryland from 2004 to 2006 and then went to Dartmouth College from 2006 to 2009 as a clinical fellow and a general surgery resident. Continuing in surgery, she became a fellow in surgical care at Johns Hopkins University from 2009 to 2010. The following year, she was a fellow in shock trauma at the University of Maryland.
Since 2011, Dr. Boneva has been an attending trauma surgeon at the University of South Florida as well as an associate and assistant professor of surgery. She is also a member of the core faculty of KRMC Faculty General Surgery Residency & KRMC Faculty Surgical Critical Care fellowship since 2014, a clinical professor at Florida International University since 2017, and a clinical assistant professor and surgery clerkship director at Nova Southeastern University since 2020. Looking towards the future, Dr. Boneva will still be practicing and seeing patients and she will be publishing some of her patients’ success stories as well as some research locally and internationally. She wants to be involved more internationally with trauma and doing volunteering work with missionaries.
As a testament to her success, Dr. Boneva was named Top Trauma Surgeon in 2020, listed in Continental Who’s Who, and became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She has also been inducted as a member of various esteemed organizations, included but not limited to the American Heart Association, American Board of Surgery, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
