Raul Artal-Mittelmark, MD, Professor Emeritus and Past Chairman at Saint Louis University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical education.
Desiring to improve pregnancy outcomes for women, Dr. Artal pursued higher education at the University of Milan, where he completed the equivalent of premed school. Subsequently, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Sackler Medical School, Tel-Aviv University in 1971. Relocating to the United States, Dr. Artal completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Metro-Case Western Reserve University and a Fellowship in High-Risk Obstetrics/Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Harbor/UCLA Los Angeles. Upon completing his medical training, Dr. Artal served as a Professor at the University of Southern California from 1978 to 1993. For the following four years, he served as Professor and Chairman at SUNY Syracuse. Joined Saint Louis University in 1998 until 2014, as the Professor and Chairman. At retirement in 2014, he was awarded Professor Emeritus status by Saint Louis University. During his time in academia, he served on a medical commission for the International Olympic Committee, numerous national and international scientific committees, authored two books and over 200 publications.
As a Holocaust Survivor (born and hidden in a Nazi slave labor concentration camp), he currently lectures on Holocaust-related topics including medical ethics. He is a frequent speaker at high schools in California, at the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum and the Simon Wiesenthal Museum in Los Angeles. As a testament to his academic success, Dr. Artal was awarded the Pacific Coast Ob/Gyn Memorial Foundation Award in 1980. Served as the President of the Council of University Chairs of Ob/Gyn 2009-2011, was honored as a Health Care Hero by the St. Louis Business Journal in 2010. Served as the President of the Council of University Chairs of Ob/Gyn 2009-2011. Served as the Editor of Clinical Updates in Women’s HealthCare 2012-2015 and others.
