Jessie Burnette Wolf Hamil, PhD, Professor Emerita at the Mississippi State University College of Education, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in science education.

Supported by more than four decades of excellence in science education, Dr. Hamil commenced her career in 1970 as a science teacher at Hawkins Middle School in Forest, Mississippi. Remaining in her position for a resounding 22 years, she joined Mississippi State University four years later in 1996. At Mississippi State University, she served as an assistant, associate and full professor of curriculum and instruction in science until attaining emerita status in 2012. During her educational tenure, she also served as a reviewer for the National Council for Accreditation of Technology Education and a science program improvement reviewer for the National Science Teachers Association. Dr. Hamil is a certified secondary science teacher through the Mississippi Department of Education.

Prior to embarking on her career, Dr. Hamil attended Mississippi College, where she received a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in secondary education in 1970. Subsequently, she earned a Master of Science in curriculum and instruction and a Doctor of Philosophy in science education, both from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1974 and 1994, respectively. Leveraging her extensive knowledge, she authored several grants and was a charter member of the Mind, Brain and Education Society. Likewise, she was president of the Mississippi Science Teachers Association, who gave her an Outstanding College Science Teacher Award. Furthermore, she earned an Outstanding Research Award from Phi Delta Kappa. Although her career has been filled with highlights, she is especially proud of speaking at the Oxford Round Table in the United Kingdom on the subject of evolution. Since 2006, she has been profiled in myriad Who’s Who publications.
