Brenda R. Bishop, BA, MAT, Retired Teacher at Dorman High School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in social studies education.

Always desiring a career in the field of teaching, particularly within the subject of history, Ms. Bishop attended Converse College and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1974. Upon her receipt of her Bachelor’s degree she taught at Lincoln Middle School in Spartanburg, South Carolina, from 1974 to 1976 while studying toward her Master’s degree. In 1976, she received a Master of Arts in Teaching at her alma mater. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Bishop joined the faculty at Dorman High School in Spartanburg, where she served as a teacher for a resounding 34 years until her retirement in 2010. During her tenure in education, she was notably appointed by the director of the State Department of Education for Social Studies, James Bryan, as a teacher consultant and a member of a 10-person committee to improve social studies curriculum in South Carolina.

Notably, Ms. Bishop has conducted in-service meetings across South Carolina and was a Fulbright Scholar in Poland for the study of preparations for joining the European Union in 2003. A former member of the National Education Association and the National Council for the Social Studies, she was also a top recipient for a study travel scholarship in Germany in 2001. Although her career has been filled with highlights, she is especially proud of time with European classes, as well as her travels to Germany and Poland. As a testament to her success, she was profiled in the fourth edition of Who’s Who in American Education in 1993. Looking forward, she intends to continue enjoying her well-deserved retirement.
