Barry William Boehm, PhD, a Distinguished Professor at the University of Southern California, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of software engineering.
With more than six and a half decades of inimitable expertise in computer science and software engineering to his credit, Dr. Boehm has garnered a laudable reputation for his manifold contributions to the field, including the development of numerous software architectures and process modeling techniques, many of which have gone on to achieve wide usage by his colleagues and scientific descendants. Presently, he serves as the TRW Professor of Software Engineering at the University of Southern California, where he teaches courses on astronautical engineering, industrial and systems engineering and computer science. Moreover, in addition to Dr. Boehm’s role as the director and chief scientist at the Systems Engineering Research Center, an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Defense, he previously served in such positions of high authority as the honorary chair professor of Hanglow Dianzi University, the director of several divisions at the Department of Defense, and the research leader and chief engineer of the TRW Defense Systems Group in Redondo Beach, California.
Well regarded for his scholarly output, Dr. Boehm has contributed as the sole author or a co-author to more than 500 research papers and books. Additionally, he has served as an editorial board member for such scientific journals as the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, Automated Software Engineering, Software Process, and Information and Software Technology, to name only a few. To remain aware of continuing developments in his field, Dr. Boehm maintains his membership with a number of pertinent organizations, including the International Council on Systems Engineering and the Association for Computing Machinery, both of which have recognized him as a fellow.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Boehm sought a formal education at the prestigious Harvard University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics in 1957. Following this accomplishment, he studied at the University of California Los Angeles, where he received a Master of Science in mathematics in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in the same subject in 1964. Since concluding his edification, he was recognized with honorary Doctorates of Science by the University of Massachusetts in 2000 and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. In recognition of his subsequent achievements in the field, Dr. Boehm has been named as the Professor of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals, has won numerous lifetime achievement awards and has received over 30 research grants by a variety of industrial organizations over the span of his career.
