Michael A. Rice, PhD, Professor at the University of Rhode Island, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in marine biology.

Upon earning a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of San Francisco and working as a marine biologist with the Interstate Electronics Corporation in 1977, Dr. Rice attained a Master of Science in marine biology from the University of California (UC), Irvine in 1981 before solidifying his passion in the U.S. Peace Corps. During this time in the early 1980s, he worked with the Philippine Bureau Officials of Aquarius Resources, leading him to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy in comparative physiology from UC Irvine in 1987. For the past 34 years, Dr. Rice has devoted his expertise and knowledge to the University of Rhode Island, having been an assistant professor from 1987 to 2000, chairman of the Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Science from 2000 to 2004, and as a full professor since 2000.

Reflecting on his illustrious career thus far, Dr. Rice is especially honored to have received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philippine Department of Agriculture, along with serving as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for District 35 in 2009 and 2010. To remain abreast of his industry, he maintains affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, American Society of Zoologists, Oceanography Society, National Shellfisheries Association, World Aquaculture Society and Asian Fisheries Society. Dr. Rice is also involved with the Edmund Rice Association, Tavern Hall Club of Kingston, Sigma Xi, Rhode Island Commodores and Society of Colonial Wars. To attest to his legacy, he is also listed in the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in American Politics, the first and eighth edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, the 38th edition of Who’s Who in the East and the 12th edition of Who’s Who in the World.
