Peter Hovland, Head Swim Coach at Oakland University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in collegiate swim coaching.
Growing up in California, Mr. Hovland spent a great deal of time outdoors and in the water. His love of swimming and an active lifestyle inspired him to earn a Bachelor of Arts in physical education from the University of California Chino in 1977. During his time as an undergraduate student, Mr. Hovland was a 23-time All-American champion, a 13-time national swim champion, and was on four NCAA championship teams. Following graduation, he earned a Master of Arts in physical education, teaching and coaching, with Honors, from the University of Northern Iowa in 1977. With the encouragement of his former swim coach, Mr. Hovland returned to California in 1979.
Mr. Hovland assumed the role of assistant swim coach at Oakland University alongside his former swim coach from his undergraduate years. They coached together at Oakland University and, in their first year, led the men’s swim team to NCAA championship victory. Mr. Hovland has remained at Oakland University and enjoys his role as the head swim coach. In recognition of his dedication to the field of collegiate swim coaching, Mr. Hovland has been inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall Of Fame in 2017 and has also been inducted into the Summit Leagues Hall of Honor, Horizon League Hall of Fame, the Oakland Universities Hall of Honor, the Chico State University Olympic Hall of Honor and the Chico Athletic Hall of Honor.
