Scott R. Degitz-Fries, Mathematics Teacher at Parkway South High School, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in secondary math education.
Mr. Degitz-Fries is a National Board Certified Teacher celebrating more than 25 years of making math understandable, accessible, and fun to the students of Parkway South High School. Raised by two teachers, Mr. Degitz-Fries developed an early passion for both mathematics and theater but shied away from following in their footsteps, intending to major in actuarial science. Before long, he recognized his calling to teach and earned both a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and a Master of Education in math education at Maryville University, with more than 30 hours of additional coursework in math education at Webster University, Truman State University, and the University of Missouri.
He began his career at Parkway South High School in 1996, cultivating a reputation for teaching everything from algebra to calculus with more than 70 original songs. Mr. Degitz-Fries is the founder of both the school’s math club, Mu Alpha Theta, and their Scholar Bowl Team. Since 2000, he has been an adjunct professor in the University of Missouri’s Advanced Credit program in addition to providing tutoring and support for National Honor Society students. Outside the classroom, Mr. Degitz-Fries nurtures his creative spirit as the Director of Community Christian Church’s Voices2Hymn Praise Team and has appeared in dozens of stage plays, musicals, dance performances, and television commercials. Mr. Degitz-Fries hopes to remain at Parkway South High School for years to come, calling it his “second home,” and treasures personal time spent with his husband, Brian, and their three children, Austin, Caleb, and Hayden.
