Harriett E. Smith Somerville, Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biochemistry.
Eminently qualified in the field of cell biology, Dr. Somerville enjoyed a fulfilling career in biochemistry education that spanned more than three decades. Working primarily on behalf of the biological sciences department at the University of Alabama, she distinguished herself as a professor from 1976 until her retirement in 2009, whereupon she was bestowed with emeritus status. During the length of her tenure, Dr. Somerville earned distinction as the director of the university’s electron microscope laboratory and optical analysis facility, the biology honors program and as a visiting lecturer and several prestigious higher learning institutions.
Well regarded for her scholarly output, Dr. Somerville has published a number of research papers and articles through various professional journals. Moreover, she was a member of the editorial board of Alabama Press between 1984 and 2009, and a member of the board of reviewers for the transactions of the American Microscopical Society. To commemorate her accomplishment, Dr. Somerville received a number of accolades, including a Ciliate Cravat Award in 2006, as well as induction into the honorable societies of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi, as well as a fellowship within the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In accounting for her standout success, Dr. Somerville credits her deep passion for her area of expertise, as well as her limitless drive to expand the breadth of her knowledge. To remain aware of developments in the field, she has been a member of the International Society of Protistologists and the Society of Protozoologists. Moreover, Dr. Somerville is a former member of the American Society for Cell Biology and the American Society for Microbiology.
