Kenneth Russell Roy, PhD, Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Glastonbury Public Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education and environmental health and safety.
Deciding to delve into environmental safety after experiencing a laboratory accident during his first year as a science teacher, Dr. Roy is now recognized today as the director of environmental health and safety at Glastonbury Public Schools, a role he obtained in 2006. Joining the Glastonbury Public Schools in 1981 as director of K-12 and director of science and safety, he has concurrently served as a manager and senior consultant with National Safety Consultants, LLC, since 1996. National Safety Consultants specializes in school safety, particularly within science and technology laboratories. Furthermore, Dr. Roy is an authorized Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) instructor, as well as a frequent speaker in the field and an author.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Roy served several academic institutions as a mathematics and science teacher beginning in 1968. He draws upon a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in biological and general sciences from Central Connecticut State College in 1968 and 1974, respectively, as well as a diploma in professional education and a Doctor of Philosophy in curriculum and instruction and science education from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, the latter of which he attained in 1985. He is a certified academic administrator of the Connecticut State Department of Education and has maintained membership with the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Roy has contributed to more than 800 state, national and international publications, co-authored 10 books and has served as a syndicated columnist for Safety Science since 2001.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Roy received the Teacher of the Year Award in Colchester, Connecticut, in 1980, Outstanding Administrator Awards from the Glastonbury Public Schools from 1985 to 1987, a Prestigious Connecticut Celebration of Excellence Award in 1987 and a Connecticut State Science Educator Leader Award from the Connecticut Science Supervisor Association in 2002. Thereafter, he earned a National Science Supervisor of the Year Award from the National Science Education Leadership Association in 2003.
