Brenda Harshbarger, Teacher at Mercer County Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mathematics and special education.
Throughout her own educational career, Ms. Harshbarger was constantly encouraged and motivated by her teachers, leading her to spearhead a career in education in her own right. To reach her goal, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in special education, magna cum laude, from Concord University in 1978 and a Master of Arts in special education, summa cum laude, from Marshall University in 2000. For the past 32 years, Ms. Harshbarger has flourished as a teacher with the Mercer County Schools in West Virginia, where she particularly focuses on special education and mathematics education. Notably, she was honored as Teacher of the Year for her exceptional dedication to her students and school district.
Reflecting on an illustrious career, Ms. Harshbarger’s career highlight is having a team of students compete in competitions, Olympiads and Bridge Designs. She also worked with a team on a skit called State of the Mind and took them to Iowa State University for an international competition, in which they had to raise $6,000 in order to perform. To remain abreast of her industry, Ms. Harshbarger holds membership with the National Education Association, the West Virginia Gifted Group for Children and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Her advice to aspiring educators is to remain passionate, as doing so will improve their students’ educational experience. She adds, “Know your passion and live it.”
