Stephen Yazulla, PhD, Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychology.
Since his formative years, Dr. Yazulla had been interested in how the brain worked and desired to conduct laboratory studies. With this goal, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of Scranton in 1967. Matriculating at the University of Delaware, he also attained a Master of Arts in psychology in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology in 1971. Dr. Yazulla commenced his career as a postdoctoral fellow through the National Institutes of Health in biology, with a subspecialty in neuroscience, at the University of Delaware and Harvard University between 1971 and 1974.
For nearly 40 years, Dr. Yazulla has devoted his career and expertise to the State University of New York at Stony Brook, more commonly known as Stony Brook University, on Long Island in New York. Showing his prowess as an assistant professor for five years, he was promoted to associate professor in 1979. Serving in the latter role until 1986, he excelled as a full professor and director of Electron Microscopy Facilities for 26 years until attaining emeritus status in 2013. Alongside his primary positions, Dr. Yazulla was a visiting professor at the National Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Dr. Yazulla recalls the highlight of his career was conducting cannabinoid research on the marijuana system before it became a popular topic. Likewise, when a group of his students praised his teaching style and information was a touching moment he will never forget. Notably, Dr. Yazulla has contributed chapters to books and more than 100 articles to professional journals. His editorial board contributions include the Journal of Neurocytology and Visual Neurosciences.
To remain abreast of his industry, Dr. Yazulla maintains affiliation with the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the International Brain Research Organization, the International Cannabinoid Research Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Society for Neuroscience and Sigma Xi. In his spare time, he enjoys archaeology, history and astronomy. As a testament to his legacy, Dr. Yazulla can also be found in the first edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the 24th edition of Who’s Who in the East.
