David Francis Alexick, PhD, Professor Emeritus at Christopher Newport University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the arts and academia.
Driven to pursue higher education, Dr. Alexick attended the Richmond Professional Institute at the College of William and Mary, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fine and studio arts in 1964. Subsequently, he received a Master of Fine Arts in art history and studio art from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1966, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy from Pennsylvania State University in 1976. Drawing upon his wealth of knowledge, he has most recently been recognized as a professor emeritus of fine arts and art history at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, in 2007. Involved on campus for nearly 30 years since 1979, he instructed several courses in art history and established the Alexick Family Scholarship for Art Students in 1996. Prior to joining the faculty, he held appointments at Longwood College and York College, and was a graduate assistant in the College of Education at Pennsylvania State University. For ten years, he has been the only judge for the Newport News Women’s Club Art exhibit for local high school students. For five years, he has taught for the Life Long Learning Society. One of the most recent courses Dr. Alexick has taught is “Collage Assemblage & 3-Dimensional Constructions,” which includes drawing and painting.
Alongside his academic appointments, Dr. Alexick has maintained a private art studio, Ardenwood Studios, since 1987, where he has produced beautiful works in sculpture, ceramics, drawing, painting and photography. His works have been included in several one-man shows across the United States in various galleries and academic institutions. To remain abreast of industry changes, he has served as a member of the College Art Association and the Virginia Art Education Association. As a testament to his success, he was granted a fellowship and teaching assistantship at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 1965. In 2001/2002, the Virginia Art Education Association awarded him with the Virginia Higher Education Art Educator Award. He also served as an Extended Board Member for the Virginia Art Education Association from 2004 to 2005.
