Stephen Cecil Thomas, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor at the University of Colorado Denver, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in political science education.
Dedicating the entirety of his career to the University of Colorado Denver, Dr. Thomas served the institution for nearly 45 years until attaining emeritus status. Initially becoming a faculty member in 1976, he flourished as an associate professor of Chinese politics and was promoted to chairman of the department of political science in 1984, which he held until 1990. Dr. Thomas had excelled as the co-director of the international affairs office from 1987 to 1992, director of the office of international education from 1992 to 1994 and Fei Yi-Ming professor of politics of the Hopkins-Nanjing program in 1994 and 1995. During his tenure, his areas of specialty included Chinese politics, economic development, financial reforms since 1978 and economic development from a historical perspective, as well as East Asian foreign relations, the role of sovereignty in economic development and the East Asian Miracle countries.
Deeply interested in the functions of Chinese politics and its relations with the United States, Dr. Thomas went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in political science from San Jose State University in 1967. Continuing his studies, he matriculated at Stanford University, where he achieved a Master of Arts in East Asian studies in 1972 and a Doctor of Philosophy in political science in 1979. Presently, Dr. Thomas holds membership with the American Political Science Association, International Studies Association and Society of Friends. He previously served on the board of directors for the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations in New York City from 1972 to 1974 and was the secretary and treasurer of the National Committee for International Studies and Programs Administrators in 1991 and 1992. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Thomas can also be found in the 25th and 26th editions of Who’s Who in the West.
