Edward Joseph Finn, Retired Professor of Physics at Georgetown University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physics education.
Devoted to the students and faculty of Georgetown, he was a faculty member at the institution for over 46 years until 1999, serving as an Instructor, Assistant, Associate and Full professor and department Chair. Notably, Dr. Finn earned a Bachelor of Science from Holy Cross College and a Master of Science from The Catholic University of America, both in Physics. In 1962, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from Georgetown. Reflecting on his career, Dr. Finn considers his greatest achievement the publication of a three-volume textbook that he and his co-author, Dr. Marcelo Alonso wrote, titled “Fundamental University Physics.” This, and subsequent editions, have been found in the hands of over one million students throughout the world in ten languages.
Over the years, Dr. Finn has served a varied series of stints with the Federal Government: at the Naval Research Laboratory (1953-83), National Institutes of Health (1983-94), National Scientific Foundation (1980-83), and The Lincoln Laboratory (1996-97). Other tasks were with The Educational Testing Service and its College Board (1965-87). He attributes some success to numerous opportunities to perform research in Deep Sea Sonar, MRI studies, and PET scan systems. A Fellow of the Washington Academy of Sciences, Professor Finn was a member of the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and Sigma Xi. He also served as a board member and Chair of the Greater Bethesda-Chevy Chase Committee, an election official for the Town of Chevy Chase, and member of a men’s club, “The Fossils” during his retirement. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Finn can also be found in the fifth edition of Who’s Who in American Education.
