Jan C. Cavanaugh, PhD, MAC, an Art Historian and Paintings Conservator with a painting background, and the owner of Jan Cavanaugh Paintings Conservation Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in art history.
With more than three decades of experience to her credit, Dr. Cavanaugh has led a successful career in art history education. Specializing in the field of Eastern European art history, her courses have included those on the early twentieth-century Russian and Eastern European avant-garde. She was also the Editor of “The Modernist Aesthetic in Polish Art,” Canadian-American Slavic Studies 21, nos 1-2, which was published in 1987, and in 2000 her book “Out Looking In: Early Modern Polish Art, 1890-1918” was the first comprehensive study of the topic to be published in the English language.
A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Cavanaugh received a Bachelor of Arts in English literature and a Master of Arts in art in 1967 and 1972, respectively. Furthermore, she received a Doctor of Philosophy in art history from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. At the start of her profession, she served as the Curator for the Reed College Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery in Portland, Oregon from 1989 to 1991. Soon thereafter, she accepted an assistant professor position with the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, as well as at the University of Missouri in Columbia until 1996.
In 2000, Dr. Cavanaugh concluded her academic efforts with a master’s degree in art conservation from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Today, she is proud to have excelled as a paintings conservator since 2002, when she established her own private practice, the Jan Cavanaugh Paintings Conservation Services in Eugene, Oregon. Concurrently, she served as an adjunct professor in the Art History Department at the University of Oregon in Eugene from 2002 to 2007. At this time, among the courses she taught was one she designed on the history, varying practices, and controversies in the field of art conservation. In 2007, she relocated her private practice to Portland, Oregon.
