Robert L. Thompson, PhD, Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in agricultural education and policy.
Committed to working on domestic and international agricultural economics, Dr. Thompson has demonstrated a five-decade-long career within the realms of education and policy. Honored as emeritus professor and granted the Faculty Global Impact Award at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2010, he excelled as the Gardner endowed chair of agriculture policy beginning in 2004. A senior fellow of the Chicago Council of Global Affairs, Dr. Thompson has also been a senior adviser to the Center for Strategic and International Studies since 2015 and was a visiting scholar at Johns Hopkin University School of Advanced International Studies from 2011 to 2015. Between 1983 and 2002, he worked in numerous prestigious roles in Washington, D.C. with the World Bank, Winrock International Institute of Agricultural Development, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Council of Economic Advisers. Simultaneously, Dr. Thompson served Purdue University as a professor and dean of agriculture from 1974 to 1993. In his early years, he contributed globally to the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria, Federal University Vicosa in Brazil and International Volcanic Service in Laos.
Finding great success in his profession, Dr. Thompson was most recently granted the Bruce Gardner Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economists Group. Likewise, he has taken home various agricultural accolades from the National Forum on Agriculture, American College of Nutrition, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Cornell University and Purdue University. A contributor of numerous articles to professional publications and author of monographs and book chapters, he hopes to continue to conduct his research and work for as long as possible. Dr. Thompson received a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University in 1967, as well as a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue University in 1969 and 1974, respectively. In 1999, he also attained a Legum Doctor from Dalhousie University and a Doctor of Science, honoris causa, from Pennsylvania State University. To attest to his legacy, Dr. Thompson is also listed in editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who In Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in America: Student Version, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
